Home Care float case managers

Hi, just talking with some of the other float case managers and wondering about the direction NOT to cover LPNs who are on strike. Or rather do it but notify UNA.
As floated Case Managers we cover two case managers each day but we also end up picking up direct (LPN) visits. It was supposed to be that we’d take the visits for the RN CMs we are covering but it ends up being regular direct visits for the non nurse CMs as well. In fact, there is no rhyme or reason to the assignments except for skill set or “team need”. We are wondering how this will affect our striking colleagues and if we should still be notifying you if doing direct work (ie taking non- nurse CM direct LPN visits, since this is considered part of our regular duties. Also, there are RNs on the direct teams too so the line is quite blurry as to LPN/RN.
Thanks

Hi,

If it really is business as usual that the RN's float to cover direct LPN visits, then it is likely not a violation of the ESA to continue to do it. However, in order to support the efforts of the strike, please try to push back that management should be the first to cover those visits. If they direct you anyway, feel free to let us know. We can pass it on to AUPE.

If the work is essential then the AUPE ESAs should capture the need to provide those services. And if those services should be provided by LPNs then staff should indicate that they believe the work is LPN work and that asking an RN or RPN to perform the service would be considered replacement work. If they insist then we encourage you to contact the Union.
