Hi,
If it really is business as usual that the RN's float to cover direct LPN visits, then it is likely not a violation of the ESA to continue to do it. However, in order to support the efforts of the strike, please try to push back that management should be the first to cover those visits. If they ...

Re: Email from management
Great question.
Getting into a task by task analysis is challenging. The simplest approach is really to pay attention to the numbers. If the work of the unit/area normally takes two RN's and five HCA's and the number of patients assigned to that group of seven does not decrease during the strike ...

Hi,
No, UNE's cannot replace LPN's, strike or no strike. LPNs are regulated health professionals and UNE's are not regulated. UNE's need to have a RN supervising their practice and the RN supervising has to be comfortable the UNE is sufficiently trained and able to perform a nursing task before it ...

Re: Home care shift scheduling
Hi,
Would they fill the RN vacation shift if the LPN was also away? If not, it does not seem appropriate. If you know the AUPE rep for the Unit, you may want to let them know this is being done. If not, please reach out to your LRO to give them the particulars to share with AUPE.

Re: Not a RN constant job and running at full operation
Hello Eugene,
This situation appears to be a violation of the AUPE ESA. If the area is normally staffed with 3 LPN's and the odd RN, then business as usual would be the odd RN could come during the strike. Not one RN regularly scheduled. I hope AUPE concludes the same and raises this through the ...

Re: patient assingments
Hello,
All of these are excellent questions and need to be answered by the manager. The RN's workload or patient assignment should not increase. If there is extra work to be done please get direction from management on who will be doing it. If the work left to be done is urgent, managers are not ...

Re: DESW Exempt Employees
Hi Nadine,
That seems very odd and is really not something we have the right to interfere with. A fully licensed RN Manager/NUEE should be able to perform the scope of an LPN/HCA with the right orientation.
I would recommend reaching out to the AUPE Chapter Chair and give them the heads up ...

Re: Filling an “essential worker”
Thanks Thomas.
I would only add that on each shift a Charge Nurse should be given the name and contact information of the Employers strike site lead. If your Unit needs additional DESW's the Employer has to make that request of AUPE. Augmenting with RN's would be a violation of their Essential ...

Great Question Rachel and thanks for the answer Thomas.
If people are reassigned (and it is not the usual day to day practice) please have them contact their Local or LRO.

Re: Public Health LPNs and RNs
Hi Lisa,
Jerry is correct. The AUPE ANC Essential Services Agreement prohibits the Employer from having our members do the work of striking members. However, we realize the line is very blurred in many areas.
Our best advice is go to work as scheduled, if our nurses are asked to do something that ...
